JPG to PNG Converter
Convert JPGs locally with solid-color transparency, proportional resizing, palette reduction and print DPI.
Choose JPG files or drag & drop
Converts to PNG. Up to 100.0 MB per file. Max 50.
- or -
Runs locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or sent to a server.
Choose JPG files or drag them into the converter to receive downloadable PNG images. Conversion starts automatically and runs on your device, without uploading local files. Process up to 50 images together and download a ZIP. Leave the PNG options unchanged for a full-color conversion, or remove a solid background, resize proportionally, reduce the palette to 256, 128 or 64 colors, and set print DPI. Conversion does not restore detail already lost in JPEG compression.

How do you convert a JPG to PNG with the right dimensions?
Choose a JPG or JPEG file and conversion starts automatically. Download the PNG directly, or adjust its dimensions, transparency, palette and print resolution first. A plain conversion produces an opaque PNG because JPEG has no alpha channel. Enable Make background transparent only when you want to remove a solid color.
For a worked example, start with an upright 2400 × 1600 JPG. Under Resize, choose Fit within max width / height, enter 1000 for Max width (px) and 1000 for Max height (px). The converter uses the smaller scale factor: min(1000 ÷ 2400, 1000 ÷ 1600, 1) = 0.4167 approximately. It rounds the scaled dimensions to whole pixels, producing 1000 × 667 pixels. It fits the image inside the box without cropping or stretching.
| Resize choice | Entered setting | PNG dimensions |
|---|---|---|
| Original size | No resizing | 2400 × 1600 |
| Scale by percent | 50 percent | 1200 × 800 |
| Fit within max width / height | 1000 × 1000 maximum | 1000 × 667 |
The maximum-size mode never enlarges a smaller source. Leave one maximum field blank to constrain only the other axis. If you need a square asset, fitting a rectangular photograph into a square box will not make it square; prepare a square crop separately.
When does converting JPG to PNG preserve quality?
JPEG compression discards image information to reduce file size. PNG compression is lossless, but converting an existing JPEG cannot reconstruct what that earlier encoding removed. The browser decodes the source into pixels and exports a PNG. Existing blur, ringing and block artifacts remain visible. Renaming a file extension alone does not perform this conversion.
Keep Resize at Original size, transparency disabled and Reduce colors at Off (full color, lossless) for a straightforward full-color working copy. PNG is useful before further editing because saving it does not introduce another JPEG compression step. Opening a JPEG does not itself damage it; repeated lossy re-encoding is the concern. Intentional resizing, color removal and palette reduction still alter image information, even though the final PNG encoding is lossless.
How do you remove a solid background without losing subject details?
Make background transparent uses a color key. By default, it samples the top-left pixel of each image. Use Background color to remove to select another color, or Use corner pixel to return to automatic sampling. This suits a dark signature on white paper or a logo on a uniform background. It does not identify foreground objects.
Tolerance starts at 12 on a 0–100 scale and compares RGB color distance. Raising it removes a wider range of similar colors, which helps with slightly uneven backgrounds but risks erasing pale subject details. Removal applies everywhere, including enclosed spaces and disconnected regions. White lettering on a white background is therefore removed too; the tool does not protect it because it belongs to a logo.
Edge feather starts at 1 pixel and accepts 0–3 pixels to soften neighboring edges. Set it to zero for an unsoftened boundary. The preview switches from the comparison slider to a checkerboard when transparency is enabled. Inspect thin strokes and edges before downloading. Gradients, shadows and subjects sharing background colors are difficult cases for this method.
Why can a PNG be larger, and which options reduce it?
A photograph's textures and noise are expensive to store losslessly. A larger PNG is therefore an expected possibility, not evidence that the converter invented detail. There is no reliable multiplier from source JPEG bytes to output PNG bytes. Compare the actual original and output sizes shown by the result instead of planning around a fixed ratio.
Resize reduces the number of pixels. Reduce colors (smaller file) instead maps pixels to a palette of up to 256, 128 or 64 colors and writes an indexed PNG. Flat graphics often tolerate this better than photographs with smooth gradients. Check for banding or changed colors. These choices do not guarantee that the PNG becomes smaller than the original JPG.
How do batch conversion and downloads work?
Select multiple files together to enter batch mode, with a maximum of 50. The initial selection starts conversion automatically. PNG settings apply across the batch, and corner-color removal samples each image independently. When you change settings afterward, use Re-convert All to update the outputs before downloading; single-image settings instead trigger automatic reconversion.
Download saves a single result, with an editable output name in single-image mode. Batch rows offer individual downloads, while Download ZIP creates converted-png.zip from successful results only. Check errors before relying on the archive: a ZIP can contain the completed files while excluding failed ones. The archive holds separate images rather than a combined canvas.
What happens to orientation, GPS data and print DPI?
Auto-rotate from EXIF starts enabled. The engine accounts for whether the browser already applies JPEG orientation, avoiding an additional rotation in that case. The PNG is generated from rendered pixels, and the source EXIF block is not copied into PNG output. GPS and camera metadata are removed, but visible information photographed in the image remains visible.
Print resolution (DPI) offers Not set, 72, 150 and 300 DPI. Choosing a value writes a PNG pHYs chunk describing resolution; it does not create pixels or sharpen the picture. Not set means no custom DPI is requested, rather than a promise about every browser encoder's metadata. Change dimensions with Resize when a receiving service asks for a particular pixel size.
What should you check if conversion fails or the output looks wrong?
The picker accepts .jpg and .jpeg files and displays a 100 MB per-file allowance. Compressed bytes are not a guarantee that a large image will decode within available memory. The PNG postprocessing path caps its longest output side at 16,384 pixels, but it must first decode the image. Try fewer files or a smaller source if your device struggles.
Use the before/after slider when transparency is off to inspect the result. For a photo intended only for viewing, keep JPG if PNG adds size without a needed benefit. Use PNG to JPG for opaque photographic output, PNG to WebP for another delivery format, or browse Image Tools for a different operation. Converting format alone does not remove an unwanted object or improve focus.
How do JPG and PNG compare?
| Format | Extension | Compression | Transparency | Animation | Browser Support | Typical Size |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| JPEG | .jpg | Lossy | No | No | Widely supported | Often smaller for photographs |
| PNG | .png | Lossless encoding; optional palette reduction changes colors | Yes | No | Widely supported | Depends on pixels, dimensions and palette |
