Split by what each person ordered
Enter item totals before tax. Shared items are split evenly; tax and pre-tax tip are proportional to each subtotal. Largest remainders receive leftover cents, with ties resolved in list order.
Enter nonnegative amounts and a positive combined subtotal to see the exact split.

Enter the receipt total and choose a tip rate, optionally subtracting included tax from the tip base. Split equally with exact cent allocation, or enter each person’s item total and shared items to split by orders. Shared items divide evenly; tax and pre-tax tip are proportional to subtotals, with leftover cents assigned by largest remainder. Share or copy either bill summary as plain text.

How do you calculate a tip and split the receipt total?
Enter the receipt total including tax, select a tip percentage, and set the number of people to calculate the tip, total bill, and equal shares. Add the included tax amount if you want to calculate the tip before tax. Results show tip amount and total bill, with per person and tip per person added for two or more people.
Use the bill as it appears on the receipt rather than adding the same tax twice. The tax field describes an amount already included in the bill. Check any existing service charge before choosing the amount and rate you want to calculate; this tool does not read the receipt or identify charges automatically.
How does tipping on the pre-tax amount work?
The pre-tax option subtracts entered tax from the bill before applying the tip rate. Tip on the pre-tax amount is checked by default and becomes active when you enter tax. With that option checked, tip base = bill − tax. With it unchecked, tip base = bill. In both cases, total = bill + tip.
For a $110 receipt that includes $10 tax, enter 110 as the bill and 10 as the tax. At 20% on the pre-tax amount, the tip base is $100, the tip is $20.00, and the total is $130.00. With three people and round-up disabled, the total per person displays as $43.33. Tax must be nonnegative and must not exceed the bill amount.
What do worked examples show at 18%?
An 18% tip on $52.93 is $9.53, giving a $62.46 total before optional round-up. The examples below use no entered tax and leave round-up disabled. The calculator rounds the tip to cents before adding it to the bill, then formats dollar results to two decimal places.
| Bill | Tip rate | People | Tip | Total | Total per person |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $59.94 | 18% | 3 | $10.79 | $70.73 | $23.58 |
| $52.93 | 18% | 1 | $9.53 | $62.46 | $62.46 |
| $280.00 | 18% | 9 | $50.40 | $330.40 | $36.71 |
The $59.94 example represents three people each ordering $15.99 plus $3.99: three orders at $19.98 each. Their 18% tip is $10.79. Equal shares display as $23.58, but multiplying that displayed share by three gives $70.74. The exact split assigns $23.58 to the first two diners and $23.57 to the third, so their payments sum to $70.73.
What changes when you round up the total?
Round-up raises the combined bill and tip to the next whole dollar when needed, and the tip absorbs the increase. On the $52.93 bill at 18%, enabling it changes the total from $62.46 to $63.00 and the tip from $9.53 to $10.07. A total already at a whole dollar stays there.
The calculator divides this adjusted total among the group afterward. It does not round every person's share up to a whole dollar. Compare the adjusted tip amount before paying, since the selected percentage describes the initial calculation and the final gratuity includes the additional round-up amount.
How can you compare rates or use a custom percentage?
The preset buttons offer 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, and 25%, and the custom field accepts other nonnegative percentages. The tip table compares 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 22%, and 25%. Click a row to select its rate. Table results follow the entered tax, pre-tax choice, group size, and round-up setting.
For groups, the table includes a per-person column alongside tip and total. Splitting is always equal; there is no allocation by ordered item.
