Add or extract VAT with preset or custom rates, then copy the net, tax, and gross breakdown.

VAT Rate

20% (UK, France, Austria, Türkiye) Standard rates; reduced rates apply to some goods.

Enter an amount above to see the breakdown
Show formulas

Add VAT: gross = net × (1 + rate / 100)

Extract VAT: net = gross / (1 + rate / 100)

Runs locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or sent to a server.

Choose Add VAT for a price excluding tax or Extract VAT for a price already including tax. Enter the amount and select a VAT Rate preset or Custom rate. The calculator immediately shows the net price, VAT amount, and gross price, with each result displayed to two decimal places. Use Copy summary to copy all three values. Calculations run in your browser for one amount at a time; the tool does not determine which tax rate applies.

How do you add VAT to a net price?

For a price excluding VAT, multiply the amount by the percentage divided by 100 to find the tax. Add that tax to the original price to get the total. Select Add VAT, enter the net price, and choose the rate. For example, 80 net at 25% gives 20.00 VAT and 100.00 gross. The calculator starts with 20% selected, but that default does not establish the rate for your purchase.

Amounts use the same currency unit as your input. The calculator displays numbers without a currency symbol and does not convert currencies. Choose a rate before interpreting the result: the tool calculates a percentage but does not identify the tax treatment of a product.

How do you find the price excluding VAT from a gross amount?

Choose Extract VAT when the price already includes tax. The inverse percentage formula is net = gross / (1 + rate / 100). The VAT portion is then gross − net. The extraction starts from the tax-inclusive total, while addition starts from a price that excludes tax.

Do not subtract the entered percentage directly from gross to remove VAT. The percentage was originally applied to the smaller net amount, so multiplying gross by that percentage overstates the included tax. Check whether your source price says inclusive or exclusive before choosing a direction; the calculator uses the selected mode and does not infer it from the number.

How can you use a custom VAT rate?

The VAT Rate buttons offer 5%, 9%, 10%, 15%, 19%, 20%, 21%, 22%, 23%, and 25%. Click Custom for another percentage, then fill in Custom Rate (%). Selecting Custom clears the previous rate, so enter a value before expecting a result. The same custom rate applies to either calculation direction.

Zero is a valid custom rate: adding or extracting 0% leaves net and gross equal, with 0.00 VAT. Negative rates and rates of 100% or more do not produce a result. Amounts must also be nonnegative; zero is accepted. The country names shown with presets are labels, not an automated decision about your transaction. The tool has no product classification or location input to select a rate for you.

Can you calculate sales tax at a known rate?

For a known taxable amount and a single percentage you already have, the same addition arithmetic gives a tax amount and total. Choose Add VAT and enter the known taxable base, then use Custom for the supplied percentage. The interface continues to label that percentage as VAT. There is no US sales-tax lookup, address search, or automatic combination of local rates.

This calculator therefore answers the numerical question at your supplied rate. It does not establish whether an item is taxable, calculate exemptions, or prepare a tax return. Use a rate appropriate to the transaction before interpreting the breakdown. For general percentage comparisons beyond a tax-inclusive price, use the Percentage Calculator.

How are results rounded, copied, and calculated?

Each displayed amount is formatted independently to two decimal places, with commas for thousands. The calculation itself keeps the unformatted number until display. Extraction can produce a recurring decimal, so the displayed amounts may conceal additional calculation precision. The tool offers no setting to change precision or choose an invoice rounding method.

Use the copy control beside a value to copy that displayed number, or Copy summary for three lines containing net, VAT with the selected percentage, and gross. Calculations run locally in the browser as you edit the inputs. This tool handles one amount and one rate at a time. For separate invoice lines and rounding choices, use the Invoice VAT Calculator rather than merging differently rated amounts into a single input.
