Choose Apply discount, then enter Original price and Discount to see the final price, amount saved, and savings percentage. Use Find discount or Find original to recover a missing value, or Stack discounts to apply percentage and fixed coupons in order. Compare offers includes tax after discounts and untaxed shipping, showing both totals and their difference. Currency symbol changes display formatting only; it does not convert amounts or apply exchange rates.

How Do You Calculate a Sale Price and Savings?
A discount reduces a starting price by a percentage or a fixed amount. For a percentage, calculate Savings = Original Price × Discount ÷ 100, then subtract that saving from the original price. An item priced at $120 with 25% off saves $30 and costs $90 before tax. The Apply discount mode shows all three values together, so you can compare the amount saved with the advertised rate without doing a second calculation.
Use a consistent starting price when comparing offers. A percentage alone does not tell you which shop has the lower checkout total: 20% off $100 leaves $80, while 10% off $85 leaves $76.50. Enter each offer using its actual starting price. For other percentage relationships, the percentage calculator provides a separate place to work with increases and differences.
How Can You Recover a Missing Price or Discount?
Choose Find discount when you know the original price and the sale price. The formula is Discount = (Original − Sale) ÷ Original × 100. A change from $150 to $99 saves $51, which is a 34% discount. The original must be positive, and the sale price must be between zero and the original. A sale price of zero correctly represents a full 100% discount.
Choose Find original when a label gives only the sale price and percentage reduction. The formula is Original = Sale ÷ (1 − Discount ÷ 100). For a $68 sale price at 15% off, the original is $80 and the saving is $12. A 100% discount makes the denominator zero; there is no unique original price to recover. The calculator explains this instead of showing an infinite price or an invented answer.
Why Does the Order of Mixed Coupons Matter?
Percentage discounts compound rather than add. On a $100 item, discounts of 20%, 15%, and 10% leave $61.20, representing 38.8% total savings. Each percentage acts on the amount left after the previous step. Adding the rates would claim 45% off and overstate savings. Stack discounts reports the effective percentage relative to the original starting price.
Fixed-amount coupons make application order especially important. On $50, a 20% sale followed by a $5 coupon leaves $35. Apply the $5 first and the 20% reduction acts on $45, leaving $36. Enter rows in the store's stated order. To compare orders, use the arrow buttons to move rows up or down and inspect the breakdown. A coupon larger than the remaining price uses only that remaining amount; savings cannot exceed the starting price.
There is no fixed five-row limit. Add the rows needed for the promotion, including zero-value rows if you want to preserve a comparison setup. Every row must be valid before a total appears, preventing a mistyped percentage from being silently omitted. The ordered breakdown lists each step, its saving, and the new price using a vertical layout suited to narrow screens.
How Is Optional Checkout Tax Calculated?
The optional checkout section adds tax after discounts in Apply discount and Stack discounts. It uses Tax = Discounted Price × Tax Rate ÷ 100, then adds that amount to the discounted price. For an $80 discounted subtotal at 8.25%, tax is $6.60 and the total is $86.60. A zero tax rate leaves the subtotal unchanged; a free item also has zero tax in this calculation.
Use this section with a tax-exclusive starting price. Adding tax to a price that already includes it would count tax twice. This is an estimate using the entered rate and the assumption that every discount reduces the taxable amount. It does not determine local tax rules or coupon eligibility. Shipping can be entered separately in Compare offers; the optional checkout section itself has no shipping field. The tip calculator handles a separate gratuity calculation if that is part of your purchase.
How Are Inputs, Rounding, and Comparisons Handled?
Enter nonnegative prices with a decimal point; grouped amounts such as 1,234.50 are also accepted. Discount and tax percentages range from 0 to 100. The original price in Apply discount, Find discount, and Stack discounts must be greater than zero. Blank, negative, and malformed values do not produce a result. Remove an unused coupon row to complete the stack instead of assuming it will be ignored.
The Currency symbol selector offers USD, EUR, GBP, TRY, JPY, INR, and None. It changes display formatting without converting values. Most amounts show two decimal places; JPY normally shows zero, while Compare offers always shows two. Percentage results always show two decimal places. Apply discount, Stack discounts, and their optional checkout tax retain intermediate precision rather than rounding each coupon step to cents. A checkout system that rounds every line or discount separately may therefore differ by a cent. Switching modes preserves the entries in each mode, so you can explore an offer and return to an earlier calculation without retyping it.
Which Offer Is Cheaper After Coupons, Tax, and Shipping?
Choose Compare offers to compare the amount payable rather than the largest advertised percentage. Each offer accepts one percentage or fixed discount, followed by one fixed coupon. The calculator reduces the price by both reductions, stops the subtotal at zero, calculates tax on that subtotal, and adds shipping afterward. Shipping is not taxed in this model. Enter the store's actual delivery charge rather than assuming free shipping.
| Entry or result | Offer A | Offer B |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $100.00 | $95.00 |
| Percentage discount | 20% | 10% |
| Coupon amount | $10.00 | $5.00 |
| Discounted subtotal | $70.00 | $80.50 |
| Tax | $7.00 | $8.05 |
| Shipping | $5.00 | $0.00 |
| Total including tax and shipping | $82.00 | $88.55 |
Offer A is cheaper by $6.55. Its calculation is $100 − $20 − $10 = $70, then $70 + $7 + $5 = $82. Offer B starts lower but ends higher: $95 − $9.50 − $5 = $80.50, then $80.50 + $8.05 = $88.55. The subtotal and tax rows above explain the calculation; the interactive comparison shows the two final totals and their difference. Equal payable totals produce an equal-cost message instead of choosing a winner.
Comparison rounds tax to cents, then adds separately rounded subtotal, tax, and shipping amounts. It compares those rounded payable totals. This differs from the unrounded intermediate calculations in the standalone checkout section. The display currency does not change this comparison arithmetic, so even JPY comparison totals keep two decimal places. Do not mix prices from different currencies: selecting EUR after entering USD amounts changes their presentation, not their value.
What Should You Check When a Result Is Missing or Unexpected?
Enter only numeric amounts, without currency symbols or a percent sign. Write 0.50 rather than .50, and use 1,234.50 rather than 1.234,50. The parser accepts properly grouped commas and a decimal point, but rejects decimal commas, scientific notation, negative numbers, and incomplete decimals. A percentage above 100 is invalid even when the other fields are correct. In Compare offers, both sets of fields must be valid before either total is shown; keep unused coupon, tax, and shipping amounts at zero rather than blank.
A fully discounted product does not necessarily mean a free delivery. If discounts reduce a comparison subtotal to zero, its tax becomes zero but entered shipping still remains payable. In Stack discounts, later coupons save zero once the price reaches zero; they do not create credit. Find original accepts a zero sale price with a discount below 100%, returning zero, but cannot recover a starting price at exactly 100% off.
Use Stack discounts for a longer sequence of promotions, because Compare offers has one main discount and one fixed coupon per offer. Neither mode checks membership requirements, minimum spending, excluded products, or whether the merchant permits coupon stacking. For a tax calculation that starts with an already tax-inclusive amount, review the invoice VAT calculator instead of adding checkout tax again. These tools perform the arithmetic you enter; the store's terms determine which inputs describe the purchase.
