Reorder PDF Pages

Drag pages or type a sequence, rotate and duplicate selections, then save with remapped bookmarks.

Runs locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or sent to a server.

Choose a PDF, drag its page thumbnails or enter a sequence in Type a page order, then click Apply reorder and Download to save the arranged PDF. Typed sequences support ascending and descending ranges, end for the last current page, and repeated pages for copies. Rotate or delete selected pages in the same session, with up to 20 undo steps. Processing stays in your browser, and bookmarks are remapped to retained pages.

Updated

How do you reorder a PDF and save the new page order?

Choose a PDF, move its thumbnails into reading order, click Apply reorder, then click Download on the result screen. For a precise arrangement, enter page positions in Type a page order and click Apply first. That updates the grid; it does not yet create the downloadable file.

For example, a six-page report contains a cover, contents page, two report pages, an appendix and a blank final sheet. You want the report before the contents page, two copies of the appendix, and no blank sheet. Starting from the untouched grid, enter 1,3-4,2,5,5. The preview becomes original pages 1, 3, 4, 2, 5, 5: six output pages, with original page 6 omitted and page 5 duplicated. The tool reports one page removed because removal counts omitted source positions, not the difference between input and output lengths. Choose Remove and apply to accept, then export.

Check the thumbnails before saving. Their bottom labels show current positions; moved pages also show a was label with the original page number. These labels belong to the editor and are not stamped onto the exported pages. Printed page numbers within a report remain part of the page content.

When is page reordering useful?

For a scanned document, compare the grid with the printed page numbers before moving anything. A transposed pair needs a local swap, while a back-to-front scan may need the entire order reversed. If the scanner omitted a sheet, reordering cannot recreate it; obtain the missing page and combine the files before organizing the result.

For reports or submissions assembled from contributors, decide the intended section sequence first: cover, summary, main text and attachments. Check the first and last page of each block after moving it. Printed references such as “see page 12” do not update when the containing page moves, so review those separately before distributing the document.

For slide decks, visual thumbnails help recognize a title slide or diagram when restructuring a presentation. Keep the editable source if its contents page, slide numbers or cross-references must change too. This tool changes the PDF's page arrangement; it does not rewrite the text printed within the slides.

How are page thumbnails generated?

The preview uses PDF.js to render source pages into canvas images. Tiny, Small, Medium and Large select different tile sizes and rendering scales. A thumbnail can therefore look softer than the downloaded page, and changing preview size is not an output-quality control.

Each tile retains a reference to its source page while the current list tracks position and added rotation. This lets the editor reuse a source preview when a page is moved or duplicated. Compare distinctive headings and diagrams as well as the position labels; use the exported PDF for final inspection of fine text and document navigation.

How do typed ranges, copies and omitted pages work?

Typed numbers always refer to the current grid, including earlier moves, copies and deletions. They do not permanently refer to original source numbers. After applying a sequence, read the updated grid before entering another one. The word end also follows the current page count.

Page order syntax
EntryMeaningWhat to check
Single page numberInclude that current positionNumbering starts at one
Ascending rangeInclude every position from start through endBoth endpoints are included
Descending rangeInclude the same block in reverse orderBoth endpoints must exist
endInclude the last current pageIt may duplicate a page already included
Repeated positionCreate another copy of that pageThe copy keeps its applied rotation

Separate entries with commas. Spaces are ignored, and empty comma-separated entries are skipped. An empty sequence, an invalid token or an out-of-range number produces an inline error without applying a new order. Omitted pages trigger a removal count and confirmation. Choose Cancel to keep the current grid, or Remove and apply to accept the reduced selection.

When should you use Reverse, Odd first or Even first?

Use Sort for bulk changes. Reverse flips the entire current list from last to first. Odd first groups current positions with odd numbers before those with even numbers. Even first does the opposite. Each group retains its existing relative order.

These presets use grid positions, not printed page labels or original source numbers. They do not recognize chapters, inspect text or automatically interleave two scanner passes. If a scanner has placed all front sides together followed by all back sides, determine the required sequence yourself and enter it explicitly. To combine separate scan files before organizing them, use Merge PDF.

How can you move, rotate or remove selected pages?

Drag a thumbnail for an individual move. Select a tile to enable Rotate left, Rotate right, Duplicate and Delete. Enable Multi to toggle several pages into a selection, or use Select all. The controls labelled Move selected up and Move selected down move the selection one position at a time. Dragging still moves the dragged tile individually.

Each rotation adds or subtracts 90 degrees. Export combines that adjustment with the page's original rotation. Duplicate inserts a copy directly after each selected page. Select the unwanted blank sheets and delete them before export; a file with no remaining pages cannot be saved. For a task involving only orientation, Rotate PDF provides a dedicated workflow.

For movement without dragging, focus the controls labelled Move selected up or Move selected down and activate them after selecting pages. Outside input fields, R rotates the selection right, L rotates left, D duplicates it, and Delete or Backspace removes it. Press A to toggle all-page selection.

Undo keeps up to 20 earlier editing states. Ctrl+Z or Command+Z invokes undo outside text fields. Reset order rebuilds the original page list, removing copies and extra rotations and restoring deleted source pages. After processing, Back to editing returns to your arrangement for further changes.

What happens to bookmarks, page quality and internal links?

Export uses pdf-lib to copy source pages into a new PDF, rather than turning thumbnail previews into output images. The reorder operation does not rescan the pages or run an image-compression step. Keep the source file: the downloaded document is a newly assembled PDF, and page copying is not a promise that every document-level feature survives.

The tool reads the source outline and rewrites bookmarks to follow retained pages. A bookmark targeting a duplicated page leads to its first output copy. Deleted or unresolved targets are removed; surviving children of removed parents move up to the nearest surviving ancestor. The result shows counts of kept and removed entries when source bookmarks were read.

Named bookmark destinations are resolved to pages and written as direct whole-page Fit destinations. Original zoom coordinates and the named-destination table are not recreated. Links inside page content are not rewritten. Test important navigation after download. If bookmark writing fails, export still completes and the result warns that bookmarks are absent. The outline reader is bounded to 5,000 entries and 12 nesting levels, so unusually large outlines need particular review.

What are the practical limits and privacy boundaries?

The input accepts PDF files, one document at a time. There is no fixed upload-size cutoff in this workflow, but the file and copied pages occupy browser memory. There is no universal safe megabyte limit: page complexity and available resources vary. For an unwieldy document, use Split PDF to prepare smaller sections.

Preview size offers Tiny, Small, Medium and Large. Smaller tiles help survey the sequence; larger previews help identify content. Preview size does not change the exported page dimensions. Selecting an unchanged document leaves Reorder pages first disabled; a move, rotation, deletion or duplication enables export.

File reading and page organization happen locally in browser memory. The Content Security Policy permits connections only to this site; that allows normal site requests while the PDF processing path sends no file to a server. Save the finished document before leaving the editor, then reopen it to check reading order, rotations and navigation. Explore the PDF tools category for other document operations.

How to Use Reorder PDF Pages
