Enter width and height to instantly get the simplified aspect ratio using the GCD algorithm. For example, 1920×1080 simplifies to 16:9. In Resize mode, choose a ratio preset or enter a custom ratio, select whether you know the width or height, enter the value, and the other dimension calculates automatically. Copy the ratio, dimensions, or CSS aspect-ratio declaration. Read local image dimensions, compare contain/cover cropping, and open Image Resizer with dimensions.

What Is 1920/1080 Simplified, and How Do Other Resolutions Compare?
1920/1080 simplified is 16:9. The formula is simplified ratio = (width ÷ GCD(width, height)) : (height ÷ GCD(width, height)). Enter the dimensions in Simplify ratio to compare these examples.
| Width × height (px) | GCD | Simplified ratio |
|---|---|---|
| 1920 × 1080 | 120 | 16:9 |
| 768 × 432 | 48 | 16:9 |
| 2560 × 1440 | 160 | 16:9 |
| 2560 × 1600 | 320 | 8:5 |
| 1080 × 1920 | 120 | 9:16 |
What Is an Aspect Ratio and Why Does It Matter?
An aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between an image's width and its height, expressed as two integers separated by a colon. A 1920×1080 display has an aspect ratio of 16:9, meaning for every 16 units of width there are 9 units of height. Aspect ratios determine how content fills a screen without distortion - displaying a 16:9 video on a 4:3 screen without adjustment either adds black bars (letterboxing) or distorts the image proportions.
The same ratio can describe many resolutions. A 1280×720 image and a 3840×2160 image both simplify to 16:9, although their pixel counts differ. Use the ratio to compare shape and the total pixel count to compare resolution. A square image has a 1:1 ratio; a portrait image such as 1080×1920 has a 9:16 ratio. None of these ratios determines physical screen size without additional measurements.
How Does the GCD Algorithm Simplify Aspect Ratios?
The Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) of two integers is the largest number that divides both without a remainder. Euclid's algorithm computes this efficiently using repeated division: GCD(a, b) = GCD(b, a mod b), stopping when b = 0 and returning a. For 1920 and 1080: GCD(1920, 1080) = GCD(1080, 840) = GCD(840, 240) = GCD(240, 120) = GCD(120, 0) = 120. Dividing both by 120 yields 16:9.
This algorithm handles any integer pair, including unusual resolutions. A 2560×1600 display gives GCD(2560, 1600) = 320, resulting in 8:5 (also written as 16:10). The 16:10 ratio was common in professional monitors before 16:9 standardization - it provides approximately 11% more vertical space than 16:9 at the same width, which many programmers and designers prefer for document work. For example, at 1600 pixels wide, 16:10 gives 1000 pixels of height while 16:9 gives 900; the extra 100 pixels represent 100 ÷ 900 × 100 ≈ 11.11% more height.
What Aspect Ratios Are Used in Professional Video Production?
Video dimensions should match the intended output frame. A 1920×1080 frame simplifies to 16:9, while a 1080×1920 frame simplifies to 9:16. These contain the same total pixel count but have opposite orientations. A 1440×1080 image simplifies to 4:3. The calculator compares dimensions only; it does not read video files, inspect pixel aspect metadata, or crop footage to fit a delivery format.
The 9:16 preset calculates portrait dimensions from a known width or height. For a 720-pixel width, the result is 1280 pixels high. Switching to 21:9 with the same width produces a rounded height of 309 pixels, because 720 × 9 ÷ 21 is approximately 308.57. Confirm the target frame dimensions separately before exporting: this tool provides the arithmetic rather than an encoder or delivery specification.
How Do Megapixels Relate to Aspect Ratio?
Megapixels measure the total pixel count (width × height / 1,000,000) regardless of ratio. A 4000×3000 image has 12 megapixels and a 4:3 ratio. A 4500×3000 image has 13.5 megapixels and a 3:2 ratio. Cropping 4000×3000 to 4000×2250 changes 4:3 to 16:9 and leaves 9 megapixels: (12 − 9) ÷ 12 × 100 = 25% fewer pixels. The calculator itself does not crop images.
For print planning, divide each pixel dimension by the chosen pixels per inch. At an assumed 300 pixels per inch, 5472×3648 pixels correspond to 18.24×12.16 inches. At an assumed 96 pixels per inch, the same image corresponds to 57×38 inches. These are arithmetic examples rather than a measurement of your screen or printer. The calculator displays pixel dimensions and megapixels, not print dimensions or output quality.
Why Might Video Dimensions Need Even Numbers?
Some video export configurations require even frame dimensions, particularly when using chroma subsampling. Exact constraints depend on the encoder and chosen pixel format, so check the receiving application rather than assuming every format has the same rule. The calculator only rounds the missing dimension to a whole pixel. For instance, a width of 500 at 16:9 produces 281 pixels of height, which is odd.
When this calculator produces a dimension with a fractional pixel (for example, scaling 16:9 to 500px wide gives 281.25px height), it rounds to the nearest integer. For video export, manually adjust to the nearest even number (280 or 282) if your encoder requires an even height. For image export (JPEG, PNG, WebP), odd pixel dimensions are perfectly valid and cause no issues. The 4K UHD standard (3840×2160) and Full HD (1920×1080) are both exactly 16:9 and have even dimensions.
How to Use Aspect Ratio Calculator
-
Simplify a ratio from pixel dimensions
In the 'Simplify ratio' tab, enter the width and height in pixels. The calculator finds the Greatest Common Divisor and divides both dimensions by it to produce the simplest integer ratio. It also shows total pixel count and megapixels.
-
Scale dimensions while locking aspect ratio
Switch to the 'Resize / scale' tab. Click a preset ratio (16:9, 4:3, 1:1, 21:9, 9:16, 3:2, 5:4) or enter a custom ratio. Then choose whether you know the width or the height and enter that value.
-
Read the calculated dimension
The calculator shows the calculated second dimension rounded to the nearest whole pixel using the formula: height = Math.round(width × ratioH / ratioW). The full resolution (e.g. 1280 × 720) and megapixels are shown.
