SERP Title Checker
Measure title width and compare desktop, mobile, and brand suffix previews as you type.
Enter a title to analyze.
Runs locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or sent to a server.
Enter text in Page Title to get a character count, measured pixel width, and live SERP title previews. The desktop preview uses a 600 px reference, while mobile shows up to two lines. A detected separator adds comparisons with and without the brand suffix. Everything updates on-device as you type. Treat the 60-character counter as guidance: letter widths vary, and these previews do not predict the exact title a search engine will display.

How do you check a title's width and brand suffix together?
Enter your proposed title in Page Title and compare the desktop and mobile cards immediately. The checker reports the original text's character count and pixel width, then adds a second pair of cards when it detects a possible brand suffix. This lets you review the complete title and the main topic together without deleting the suffix from your input.
For a worked example, paste Garden Planning Guide for Small Spaces | Greenleaf. The complete title contains 50 characters, including spaces and the pipe. The detected main title, Garden Planning Guide for Small Spaces, contains 38. The suffix and separator occupy 12 characters. The metrics still describe the complete 50-character input; the extra cards are visual comparisons, not separate metric panels.
| View | Text used | Rendering rule |
|---|---|---|
| With brand suffix | Garden Planning Guide for Small Spaces | Greenleaf | Desktop width reference and mobile two-line layout |
| Without brand suffix | Garden Planning Guide for Small Spaces | The same two preview layouts |
| Metrics | The complete input | 50 characters; width measured in your browser |
Read the measured width rather than multiplying the character count by an assumed average. The tool measures the actual string with a canvas font setting. Edit the wording, repeat the comparison, and decide whether the topic remains clear when the brand is included. No Analyze button or device switch is required.
How are character count and pixel width different?
The character counter uses JavaScript string length. For ordinary English text, letters, spaces, and punctuation each contribute to that count. The width measurement uses CanvasRenderingContext2D.measureText with 20px Arial and rounds the result to the nearest whole pixel for the metric. The two values answer different questions: how much text you entered and how much horizontal space that text occupies in the selected font.
The 60-character counter is a soft guide, not an input restriction. You can continue typing beyond it. A title with many narrow letters can exceed the character guide while remaining inside the desktop width reference. A title with wide letters can exceed the width reference sooner. The progress bar follows character count and stops growing at its full width.
For emoji and some other Unicode text, the counter reports UTF-16 code units rather than visible symbols. A combined emoji can therefore contribute several units. Desktop shortening uses grapheme segmentation instead, keeping a combined visible character together when selecting the text before an ellipsis. Use the preview when the numeric character count does not match the number of symbols you see.
How do desktop and mobile previews shorten a title?
The desktop preview measures the full title against a 600 px reference. If it fits, the text stays intact. If it exceeds that reference, the tool finds a shorter prefix that fits together with the ellipsis character, removing trailing whitespace from that prefix. It does not simply slice every title at the sixtieth character.
The mobile card follows a different rule: it receives the complete title, uses 18px Arial with a 26px line height, and limits the display to two lines. Wrapping depends on the available card width. The checker does not calculate a separate mobile pixel score or promise that a particular handset will show the same ending.
The desktop card also has visual overflow clipping inside its container. A narrow page layout can therefore show less than the measured prefix suggests. Use both cards as layout estimates. The displayed URL and description are examples, not metadata taken from your site.
Which separators count as a brand suffix?
The comparison recognizes a pipe, an ordinary hyphen, or an en dash. It uses the first matching separator, including surrounding spaces, when that match starts after the beginning of the title. It then keeps the text before that match and removes trailing whitespace for the Without brand suffix variant. Multiple separators do not make it choose the last one.
This rule does not identify organizations or understand title meaning. For example, Small-space Garden Guide | Greenleaf produces Small as the main-title comparison because the first hyphen occurs inside the opening word. An em dash is not one of the recognized separators. A separator at the very beginning does not produce the normal suffix-removal comparison.
Check the detected split before using it as an editing decision. The original input remains available in the With brand suffix cards, and the metrics continue to measure that full string. You can revise punctuation manually if the comparison does not reflect your intended title structure.
What do the optimization messages actually check?
The feedback is a small set of text and length checks. Fewer than 30 counted units triggers a short-title message. More than 60 triggers a character warning, and a rounded width above 600 px triggers a width warning. Leading or trailing whitespace generates its own notice. A recognized separator anywhere in a title longer than 55 characters triggers a reminder about placing the main topic before the separator.
Positive length feedback appears when the count is at least 30, no more than 60, and the rounded width is within the reference. It can appear alongside a whitespace or separator notice. Interpret it as passing those length conditions, not as an assessment of relevance, readability, search demand, or likely clicks.
Keep the page topic clear early in the title and remove redundant words before removing useful detail. A short title does not need filler merely to clear a warning. Review the wording against the page itself; this tool cannot evaluate whether the text accurately describes your content.
What should you check before publishing the title?
Enter plain title text, not a complete HTML title element, a URL, or encoded markup. The input does not parse a page or decode HTML entities for you. Remove accidental surrounding spaces and review the title with its intended suffix. Analysis runs in browser state with local canvas measurement; no page fetch is involved.
The checker does not diagnose indexing, inspect duplicate titles across a site, or reproduce title rewriting by a search engine. Keep the title consistent with the page's subject and heading, then verify the published metadata separately. For the accompanying snippet text, use Meta Description Checker. Use Character Counter for broader text counting, or browse the Text Tools collection for related editing tasks.
How to Use SERP Title Checker
-
Page Title
Type or paste the title text, including any brand suffix. Enter the text itself rather than HTML markup; analysis updates as you type.
-
Google SERP Preview
Compare Desktop · 600 px reference with Mobile · two lines. These are simultaneous preview cards, so no device toggle is needed.
-
Without brand suffix
When a pipe, hyphen, or en dash is detected after initial text, compare both variants. Check that the detected suffix really is a brand.
-
px width
Review the original title's metrics and feedback, then edit Page Title to remove excess wording or surrounding whitespace.
