Your caption is saved locally in your browser only. It never leaves your device.
Type or paste text into Your Caption in Instagram Caption Counter to see live character counts, hashtags, mentions, emojis, URLs, and line breaks. Choose Caption, Bio, Comment, or DM to compare the same draft against the tool's configured limits of 2,200, 150, 2,200, or 1,000 characters. Review the preview and duplicate hashtag warning, then use Copy Stats for a text summary. Drafts save locally in your browser when storage is available; the preview is a planning aid.

How do you count an Instagram caption before posting?
Paste your text into Your Caption and choose Caption to see its character total against the tool's 2,200-character threshold. The count updates as you type, alongside hashtags, mentions, emojis, URLs, words, and line breaks. You can keep editing above the threshold; the tool reports the excess rather than cutting your draft.
For a reproducible example, enter Hello world #photo @sam with no surrounding spaces. It contains 23 characters, four words, one hashtag, and one mention. There are no emojis, URLs, or line breaks. The hashtag and mention are included in the character total, and the word counter treats each whitespace-separated token as a word. This makes the example useful for checking what each statistic measures before pasting a longer draft.
Which limits do Caption, Bio, Comment, and DM use?
The four tabs reuse the same input and statistics. Selecting another tab changes the character threshold, preview style, and applicable checklist items. It does not create a separate draft. The table lists the tool's configured values, rather than promising that every publishing surface will apply the same counting and display rules.
| Tab | Character threshold | Preview cutoff | Hashtag warning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Caption | 2,200 | 125 | Above 30 hashtags |
| Bio | 150 | 150 | No numeric hashtag threshold |
| Comment | 2,200 | 125 | No numeric hashtag threshold |
| DM | 1,000 | 150 | No numeric hashtag threshold |
Character limit shows a warning color from 90% of the selected threshold and a red state only above it. For Caption, those boundaries are 1,980 and 2,201 characters respectively. Reaching exactly 2,200 still passes the within-limit check. The editor does not publish content or verify that a platform will accept it.
How should you use the opening-text preview?
Use the preview to review your opening sentence separately from the full draft. Caption and Comment preview the first 125 grapheme clusters when segmentation is available. Bio and DM preview the first 150. Text after the cutoff remains in the editor and still contributes to all statistics. This is a local mockup, so check the final appearance in the destination interface before publishing.
The Caption quality checklist includes Hook in first 125 chars. Its test is simply whether the trimmed preview contains at least 30 characters. It does not analyze meaning, identify a call to action, or predict engagement. Put the essential context near the start and read that opening yourself; a passed check only confirms the configured length condition.
How are hashtags, mentions, and links counted?
Hashtags match a hash sign followed by letters, numbers, or underscores. Accented letters are supported. Duplicate detection lowercases matched tags, so repeated tags with different capitalization are grouped together. Every occurrence still contributes to Hashtags. The duplicate alert identifies repeated spellings without editing your caption.
Mentions match an at sign followed by letters, numbers, underscores, or periods. URLs match text beginning with http:// or https:// through the next whitespace boundary. These are text-pattern counts, not account or link validation. A bare domain without either prefix is not included in URLs. The tool does not check whether a mentioned account exists or whether a link opens successfully.
The Caption checklist's 3–30 hashtag range is a configured heuristic, not a reach measurement. Its warning above 30 is also a local threshold. Choose tags that describe your content; this counter does not recommend tags, compare caption-versus-comment placement, or measure distribution.
Do spaces, line breaks, and emoji sequences affect the total?
Spaces stay in the character total, including leading and trailing spaces. Line Breaks counts newline characters, not the number of displayed lines: two lines separated by one newline contribute one line break. A blank line between paragraphs normally needs two newline characters. Visual wrapping in the editor does not insert a newline into the draft.
Character counting uses grapheme clusters when the browser provides segmentation. The separate Emojis card counts extended pictographic components, so a joined sequence can contribute one character but several emoji matches. Regional-indicator flag sequences are not counted by that emoji pattern. If segmentation is unavailable, the character total falls back to JavaScript string length. Use Character Counter for broader text checks or Word Counter when editing longer copy.
How can you save a draft or copy the results?
The draft is processed on-device and saved locally when browser storage is available. Autosave waits 1,200 milliseconds after an edit; another edit resets that timer. Saved appears after a successful write. Returning to the tool restores stored text, while the selected tab starts on Caption. Clear empties the editor and removes the stored draft. Storage restrictions can prevent persistence, so keep another copy of text you need.
Copy Stats copies a plain-text report with the selected platform, characters, words, hashtags, mentions, emojis, URLs, and line breaks. A duplicate-hashtag line is added only when duplicates exist. This button copies statistics rather than the caption itself. Select text in Your Caption to copy the draft for use elsewhere.
