How do you count an essay and check the results?
Paste your draft into Your essay to see live counts and estimates without a separate calculate button. For a reproducible example, paste exactly We test each claim. We keep each draft clear. as one paragraph, without surrounding quotation marks. Leave citation exclusion off. The counter separates words at whitespace and includes punctuation in the character totals.
| Statistic | Result | How it is calculated |
|---|---|---|
| Words | 9 | Four words followed by five words |
| Characters / No Spaces | 45 / 37 | Original text / text with whitespace removed |
| Sentences / Paragraphs | 2 / 1 | Two sentence endings, no blank-line separator |
| Syllables | 9 | One estimated syllable per word |
| Pages | 1 | 9 divided by 250, rounded upward |
| Reading / Speaking / Handwriting | 2s / 4s / 14s | Fixed rates with displayed seconds rounded |
The Flesch-Kincaid calculation for this example is 0.39 × (9 ÷ 2) + 11.8 × (9 ÷ 9) − 15.59 = −2.035. The tool clamps that result to zero and displays a dash for the reading-level label. A dash here does not mean the text failed to load. Use a longer representative passage when comparing readability across drafts.
What counts as a word, sentence, or paragraph?
Words are nonempty chunks separated by spaces, tabs, or line breaks. Repeated whitespace does not add words. A contraction or hyphenated expression without spaces stays one chunk; a standalone dash separated by spaces counts as its own chunk. Text written without spaces is not segmented into individual language-specific words. These rules explain differences from counters that use dictionaries or language-aware segmentation.
A sentence ending is a run of periods, exclamation marks, or question marks followed by whitespace or the end of the text. An abbreviation such as U.S. followed by a space can therefore add a sentence boundary. Nonblank text has at least one sentence even without final punctuation. Paragraphs split at blank lines, including blank lines containing spaces; a single newline alone does not start another paragraph.
Characters uses JavaScript string length, so some emoji occupy more than one unit. No Spaces removes all whitespace, including tabs and newlines. A blank or whitespace-only input returns zero statistics. Use the Character Counter when your main task is checking character length rather than planning an essay.
How does excluding citations change the count?
Exclude citations removes matching parenthetical groups from the text used for words, syllables, sentence count, reading level, pages, and time estimates. The button then reads Citations: Off, and a status message reports how many groups were excluded. Your essay remains intact in the editor; this is a counting option, not a text deletion command.
Detection is a pattern, not full APA or MLA validation. A group must begin immediately with an uppercase A–Z letter and contain a four-digit year starting with 19 or 20; a lowercase suffix after the year is supported. Nested parentheses do not match as one group. A year alone in parentheses, a lowercase-starting group, or an author-and-page citation without a year does not qualify. An unrelated uppercase parenthesis containing a matching year can qualify accidentally.
Review the result before relying on it. Bibliographies, headings, quotations, and footnotes are not excluded by section. Characters, No Spaces, and Paragraphs still use the original text even when citations are excluded. Paste only the material your assignment asks you to count if its exclusions differ from this detector.
How do custom goals and preset word limits work?
Enter a positive target in Custom goal to add a Your Goal bar. The preset buttons set that same field: High School selects 500, Common App 650, Undergrad 1,000, and Grad Paper 2,500. The four built-in comparison bars remain visible. These labels are planning shortcuts; confirm the required limit in your own assignment rather than treating them as universal academic rules.
Each bar reports words left or words over. Its filled percentage rounds to a whole number and stops at 100%; text over the target still shows the excess and uses the red over-limit styling. The displayed ±10% range is arithmetic guidance, not permission to exceed a strict maximum. Changing a target does not shorten the essay or prevent further typing.
How are essay pages and writing times estimated?
The page estimate is ceil(words ÷ 250), so even a short nonempty draft occupies one estimated page, and 251 words occupy two. It is not a fractional page display or a document layout preview. Font choice, margins, headings, and spacing are not inputs. Check your formatted document when a submission specifies pages rather than words.
Time estimates use 238 words per minute for Reading, 150 for Speaking, and 40 for Handwriting. They use the effective word count after optional citation removal. Subminute results show seconds rounded to the nearest whole second, with a minimum of one second for positive durations. These rates are fixed; rehearse aloud for a timed presentation rather than treating Speaking as a guarantee. For a separate timing task, open the Reading Time Calculator.
How can reading level and highlighting guide revision?
The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level formula is 0.39 × average words per sentence + 11.8 × average syllables per word − 15.59. This implementation estimates syllables using English vowel groups and ending adjustments. It is an approximation, especially for names, specialist vocabulary, and non-English text. It does not prove that a reader at the displayed grade will understand the argument.
Switch Highlight: Off on to inspect sentence length: 16–25 words receive light shading, 26–35 stronger shading, and 36 or more red shading. Sentences up to 15 words remain unshaded. The view uses the original essay, including citations; an unfinished final fragment can remain unshaded. Click Highlight: On to return to editing. Split an overloaded sentence or replace an unnecessarily long word, then compare the result while preserving meaning.
Can you import, save, copy, and clear a draft?
Upload .txt reads a plain-text file as UTF-8 and replaces the current editor contents. There is no PDF or word-processing document parser. The file handler sets no explicit size cap, but large text still depends on browser memory and processing capacity.
Text stays on-device and autosaves to browser localStorage after a 1.2-second pause. Saved indicates a stored or restored draft; unavailable or full storage can prevent saving. Custom goals and toggle settings are not part of that saved text. Copy Stats copies the numerical summary, including excluded-citation count when applicable. Clear removes the editor text and local draft. Keep a separate document backup before replacing or clearing work.
