PNG to ICO Converter
Build multi-size ICO files with background, padding and crop controls, or download a favicon pack.
Choose PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG image(s) or drag & drop
One image creates a multi-size .ico. Drop several for batch mode. Max 50.
Runs locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or sent to a server.
Choose a PNG image, select frames under ICO sizes to include, and click Download .ico to save a multi-size icon. Conversion runs automatically in your browser, with 16, 32 and 48 pixel frames selected initially. Add 64, 128 or 256 pixel frames, adjust background, padding and fit, or download a favicon pack with PNG icons and a manifest. JPG, WebP and SVG inputs are also accepted; selecting multiple images starts batch conversion.

How do you turn a PNG into an ICO with the right framing?
Choose your PNG and the converter immediately builds a multi-size ICO. Start with the selected 16, 32 and 48 pixel frames, inspect the previews, then choose Download .ico. There is no separate conversion button in the single-image view. Background, padding and fit let you control how the same source appears inside each square frame.
For a worked example, use a 400 by 200 pixel logo, select a 32 pixel frame, choose Contain and set Padding to 10%. Padding is measured per side: the target area is 32 × (1 − 2 × 0.10) = 25.6 pixels wide. The scale is the smaller of 25.6 ÷ 400 and 25.6 ÷ 200, giving the following centered drawing rectangle.
| Measurement | Result |
|---|---|
| Drawn width | 25.6 pixels |
| Drawn height | 12.8 pixels |
| Left offset | 3.2 pixels |
| Top offset | 9.6 pixels |
These are fractional canvas coordinates, not rounded pixel margins. The source remains proportional. The extra space above and below comes from fitting a rectangle into a square; it is separate from the selected padding.
How do background, padding and fit change the icon?
The default style is Transparent, zero padding and Contain. Transparent leaves unpainted canvas areas clear; Color fills the canvas before drawing your image. A solid background fills transparent areas in the artwork too, but it does not remove an existing opaque background from the source.
Padding accepts whole percentages from 0 to 30 and reduces the target width and height on both sides. Contain fits the entire source into that area. Cover (crop) uses the larger scale factor, so a rectangular source extends beyond the target area. The canvas clips overflow at its outer edges. With padding, Cover does not guarantee an empty border on every side.
Which frame sizes should you include?
The size buttons offer 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixels. The tool recommends the initial 16, 32 and 48 selection for favicons. Add larger frames when your destination needs them; this converter offers no custom frame dimensions. Keep at least one size selected to display the single-image output controls.
Every selected frame is rendered directly from the same source with high-quality canvas smoothing. The tool does not let you supply separately drawn artwork for each size. Inspect the smaller previews for disappearing strokes and text. Larger previews are displayed at a maximum of 64 pixels in the interface, so their displayed width is not their encoded frame dimension.
What are ICO and PNG-embedded frames?
ICO is a container for icon images. This encoder follows the ICONDIR structure: a 6-byte header, one 16-byte ICONDIRENTRY for each frame, then the image data. With three frames, the header and directory occupy 54 bytes before any image payload. The 256 pixel dimension is recorded as zero in its one-byte directory field.
Traditional ICO files can contain bitmap image data; this tool exclusively embeds complete PNG images. Each directory entry records 32-bit color depth, payload length and offset. The ICO contents table reads frame sizes and PNG byte counts back from the generated directory. Total download size also includes the header and entries. Renaming a PNG to .ico would not create this structure, and changing the container does not restore missing image detail.
What does the favicon pack include?
Download favicon pack (.zip) creates a separate bundle named favicon-pack.zip. It includes favicon.ico, favicon-16x16.png, favicon-32x32.png, apple-touch-icon.png at 180 pixels, icon-192.png, icon-512.png, site.webmanifest and head-snippet.html.
The pack's ICO always contains 16, 32 and 48 pixel frames, regardless of the size buttons. Standard pack images use your current background, padding and fit. The Apple touch icon is made opaque, using the selected color or white when transparency is selected. Separate PNG files carry the larger manifest icons; they are not extra frames inside the ICO.
How are maskable PWA icons different?
Enable Maskable icons to add separate 192 and 512 pixel maskable PNGs. Their background fills the whole image and uses your selected color, with white as the transparent-setting fallback. Their layout ignores standard padding and fit: the complete source rectangle is scaled into a centered circle whose radius is 40% of the icon width.
The manifest adds both files with purpose: "maskable". Standard icons remain included. Transparent margins already inside your source count toward its rectangle, so unnecessary source whitespace can make the visible logo smaller. These files and a manifest alone do not implement application behavior such as offline support.
How do you install the generated favicon files?
Extract the pack into your site's public root and copy HTML for your head tag using Copy HTML. The generated snippet links to the root paths for favicon.ico, the 16 and 32 pixel PNGs, the Apple touch icon and site.webmanifest. If you store them in another directory, edit the snippet and manifest icon paths together.
Review the manifest before deployment. Its name and short_name come from the source filename without its extension; theme_color and background_color remain white even when you choose another icon background. The tool supplies files and HTML, but does not upload them or edit your website.
What input limits and batch behavior should you expect?
PNG, JPG, JPEG, WebP and SVG files are accepted. Raster images use their decoded dimensions. SVG is first rasterized with its longest side set to 512 pixels, then used to generate the icons. Sources smaller than an output can be enlarged, but enlargement cannot recover detail. Use Image Resizer to prepare dimensions or SVG to PNG for a separate raster export.
Multiple files start batch conversion, which retains the first 50 sources and processes them sequentially. Each successful output keeps its source basename with an .ico extension. Failed files show errors; Download ZIP collects successful outputs as icons.zip. After changing shared settings, use Re-convert All before downloading. Unlike a single-image favicon pack, this ZIP contains ICO files only.
FileReader, canvas rendering, PNG encoding and ZIP creation run in your browser. The conversion path sends no source file to a conversion server. This tool sets no explicit source byte-size limit; practical capacity depends on image decoding and available browser memory. If a file fails, try a smaller source or fewer files before repeating the conversion.
How to Use PNG to ICO Converter
-
Choose PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG image(s) or drag & drop
Choose one image for previews and a favicon pack, or select multiple images for batch ICO conversion. Batch mode accepts up to 50 source files.
-
ICO sizes to include
Select at least one size. The initial selection is 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48; additional buttons offer 64x64, 128x128 and 256x256.
-
Icon style
Set Background to Transparent or Color, adjust Padding from 0% to 30%, and choose Contain or Cover (crop). Single-image results update automatically.
-
Download .ico
Review previews and ICO contents, then save the ICO. Alternatively, enable Maskable icons if needed and choose Download favicon pack (.zip). Batch results use Download ZIP; after changing batch settings, use Re-convert All before downloading.
