ZIP Extractor

Look inside. Take only what you need.

Choose a ZIP archive or drag & drop

Up to 2 GB ยท JAR, APK, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX and EPUB files are ZIP archives too.

Runs locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or sent to a server.

Choose a ZIP archive to browse its folders and files without uploading it. Filter by name or file type, preview text and images, then download individual files or selected entries as a ZIP. Extract all prepares a folder save in supported browsers and downloads a ZIP elsewhere. Password-protected ZipCrypto and AES archives are supported; unsafe paths are skipped and unusually high compression ratios require confirmation.

How do you open a ZIP without installing software?

Choose the archive from your Chromebook, phone, or work PC using the file picker, or drag it onto the drop zone. The directory appears as a folder tree, with file sizes and modification dates alongside each entry. This is useful when a computer does not permit installing applications, or when you want to check a download before extracting everything. The selected file stays on your device throughout browsing and extraction. No account or archive upload is involved.

The file cap is 2 GB, but that is not a promise that every archive below that size will fit in memory. Compressed data can expand considerably, and a phone may have much less available memory than a desktop. The extractor applies a lower expanded-size limit on devices that report limited memory, and rejects archives with more than 10,000 entries. If a large archive fails, ask its sender to divide the contents into separate, ordinary ZIP files rather than a split archive.

How can you preview files before extracting them?

Expand folders to inspect their contents, or use the name filter to find a particular filename without matching letter case. File type chips narrow the view to images, text and code, documents, or other files. Matching ancestors remain visible so you can understand where a result belongs. Large lists are divided into pages, while closed folders keep their children out of the rendered list. Keyboard users can move with the arrow keys, jump with Home or End, and toggle selection with Space.

Choose an entry to see its original path, expanded size, compressed size, modification date, and encryption status. Load preview reads supported text files as plain text, including HTML and SVG source, without executing markup. Text previews show at most the first 256 KB and label truncated content. Copy copies only the displayed preview. Supported raster images can be displayed from a temporary local object URL, which is released when the preview changes. Other files show facts without attempting to run them; image previews above 20 MB are omitted.

How do you extract selected folders or all files?

Select a folder checkbox to select its descendants, or choose individual files. A partially selected folder shows a mixed checkbox state. Download file extracts the entry currently shown in the details pane. Download selected as ZIP creates a new archive containing the chosen entries and their relative paths. The original archive is unchanged. Unsafe paths are excluded from selection, even if you select their surrounding folder, so a bulk action cannot accidentally restore a dangerous destination.

Extract all prepares every safe entry. In browsers with directory access, the next Save to folder button opens a destination picker and writes the prepared files while keeping the folder hierarchy. Empty folders are omitted by folder saving. Names may be sanitized or renamed to avoid collisions, and the result reports those changes. Other browsers download the extracted selection as a ZIP. Multi-file work displays progress and a Cancel button. Cancellation stops further work, but files already written into a chosen folder remain there.

What happens with encrypted or suspicious archives?

Password-protected archives can use ZipCrypto or AES. Enter the archive password in the password field, with the show or hide control if you need to check your typing. The field clears after submission; the open archive retains the password only in memory to decrypt its entries. An incorrect password produces an error rather than a downloaded result. Loading another archive or leaving the page releases the current session. There is no password recovery feature, so request the correct password from the sender if necessary.

The extractor checks paths and output limits before saving. Traversal paths, absolute locations, and device names are marked as skipped for safety. An unusually high compression ratio requires a separate confirmation because a small compressed entry can produce a much larger output. Confirmation does not disable output-size limits. These protections reduce archive-specific risks, but they do not establish that a document or application is harmless. Use File Hash Verifier to compare a download with a checksum obtained from a trusted publisher.

Why are Office documents and ebooks accepted as ZIP files?

DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, EPUB, JAR, and APK are container formats built on ZIP packaging. Opening one here reveals its internal resources rather than its normal document or application interface. For example, you can find embedded images inside an Office document, inspect XML resources in an ebook, or examine configuration files packaged with an application. This is inspection and extraction, not document rendering or application installation. Keep an untouched copy of the original container if you plan to use it in its usual application afterward.

RAR, 7z, split archives, and unsupported compression methods require a different local workflow. Changing a filename extension does not change an archive format. If an internal JSON resource needs inspection after extraction, use JSON Formatter. To reduce the size of recovered pictures for a website or message, try Image Compressor. All three tools process their inputs locally, so extracted resources do not need to be uploaded as part of that workflow.

How to Use ZIP Extractor

  1. Open your archive

Choose a ZIP up to 2 GB, or drop it onto the page. JAR, APK, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX and EPUB containers can also be inspected.

  2. Unlock and browse

Enter a password if the archive is encrypted. Expand folders, filter filenames, or use the file type chips to find entries.

  3. Preview and select

Choose a file to view its details. Load a supported text or image preview, then select files or folders with their checkboxes.

  4. Extract your files

Download one file, download selected entries as ZIP, or choose Extract all. Where folder saving is supported, wait for preparation and choose Save to folder.
